Make Your Holiday Job-Search List and Check It Twice

Make Your Holiday Job-Search List and Check It TwiceMake Your Holiday Job-Search List - and Check It TwiceMake Your Holiday Job-Search List - and Check It TwiceMake the most of this holiday season with a checklist for your job search. Its conventional wisdom that successful people often make and follow to-do lists, and this is as true for the job search as anywhere else. As the holiday season fast approaches, keep your job hunt top of mind by making a practical checklist for your job hunt and checking it twice. Heres what every job seeker should be sure to include on a holiday to-do list.1) Update your resumeYour resume should be updated at least once a year, or more regularly if youve changed jobs. Keep it around one page if youre new to the workforce and two pages if youre a mid-level or senior-level professional. Make sure it is pleasing to the eye with a readable, professional font and layout. If you are still using an objective statement, update it to a professional summary a nd add in keywords for searchability. Above all, make sure you list your specific accomplishments and the measurable impact youve made at previous jobs, not just your responsibilities.Related11 Steps to Writing the Perfect Resume2) Monitor relevant job boardsJob boards may not be the only way to find jobs, but that doesnt mean you should neglect their existence. After you have a well-written resume filled with accomplishments, upload it to relevant job boards. A word of warning your resumes format may be altered if you copy and paste it as text, so be sure to double check before you click complete. Sign up to receive email alerts on jobs that may interest you, and take a few minutes each day to check out the latest openings. And of course, update your profile on each job board whenever you update your resume.3) Manage your social media presenceSocial media is a great way to stay in touch with your network and build connections with potential employers. Because of this, maintaining a positive, professional online presence should be a key part of your job-search strategy. But it goes much further than simply making sure that your profile is consistent with your resume. Through sites like LinkedIn and Twitter, you can build your personal brand and strengthen yourself as a candidate. You can also use social media to join relevant professional groups, participate in industry discussions online, and post interesting content. This will help you establish online credibility and may also lead to new and useful connections. Try to post updates to your profiles at least twice a week.RelatedSocial Networking How to Connect With fhigkeit Employers Online4) Make the most of your professional networkYour professional network is a powerful tool, so take advantage of it when you are searching for a job. Reach out to your network about your goals and ask questions. Dont harass everyone in your contact list about job opportunities, but do stay current and let people know youre on the market and would appreciate appropriate introductions. Find out what you can do for others as well. Youd be surprised at how often you can help, and stronger relationships can only benefit you further down the line.5) Create cover lettersThis takes time, so a good technique is to have a really great template and some bullet points you can plug in, depending upon the role. When you apply for a position, its important that you tailor the cover letter as much as possible for that particular job. Hiring managers can tell when youve sent them a copy-pasted cover letter, so take the time to modify every letter you send out so its a match for the job in question.By diligently following this job-search checklist, you can maximize your time and efforts this holiday season and position yourself to start the New Year with a new career.Get ready for the holidays and check your resume twice with a free resume critique.Recommended ReadingResume and LinkedIn Profile Writing How Different Sh ould They Be?Personal Branding is Critical to Your Careers Future. How to Negotiate Your Salary - Resumonk Blog

How to Negotiate Your Salary - Resumonk BlogHow to Negotiate Your Salary So. Youve aced the interviews and been offered a job. Youre almost ready to advance your career in a new position. But before you sign an employment agreement, you still need to talk about your salary. Whether youre having a review, getting a promotion or youre entering into a completely new position with a new company, your salary is probably one of your biggest motivators. When you feel like youre properly compensated for your work, you probably feel happier on the job.Unfortunately, not everyone tries to negotiate a salary that works best for them. Asking for mora money can be scary, but undervaluing yourself and your work can be even worse.Knowing how to negotiate your salary is the best way to ensure you get the compensation you deserve. To prepare for your next salary negotiation, here are a few steps you can take.1. Do Your ResearchIf youre about to ask for a larger salary, you need to know whether or not youre being realistic. While you may believe youre worth the amount youre searching for, you need to know that its within the industry standards for a similar job.Look online for expected ranges for the position youre considering. If you cant find information online, pick up the phone and talk to some recruiters. Develop a salary range that you would be comfortable considering.2. Select a Specific NumberDont go into a negotiation with only a salary range. If you dont appear confident in the salary youre asking for, the employer may not believe youre worth that amount.Choose an actual number somewhere towards the top of your determined salary range. If you select an exact number rather than a rounded number, youll show the hiring manager that youve truly thought about how much youd like to get paid.3. Have a Walk Away PointYour walk away point should be the lowest salary that youd be willing to take. By thinking about this number before you walk into a negotiation, you wont need to take the time to think about it while your potential employer is waiting for you.Your walk away point may be determined based on your cost of living, financial need or just because you know that your work is worth more than that. While it wont be easy to turn down a job offer, taking a salary well below what you know you need will only hurt you in the long run.4. Write Down Talking Points When asking for a bump in your salary, youre going to need to have a few reasons that explain why you deserve it. But when you get nervous, you may be likely to forget the points you want to make.Save yourself the stress by creating a one-page sheet that outlines all the reasons you deserve a raise or a higher salary. If you already work at the company, you may want to include some points about specific projects youve assisted on and how your performance helped. If youre interviewing with a new company, talking points about accomplishments, awards or certifications will do.5. Get ComfortableThe mor e you practice what you want to say, the more comfortable you will be when the time comes to actually talk with your anfhrer or hiring manager. Spend some time getting familiar with the points you want to make and the conversation youd like to have.Writing down your talking points is a great place to begin. You will also want to rehearse the conversation aloud a few times. If you have a friend or family member willing to sit with you, talking with another individual through the main points can be very helpful.6. Carry Yourself With Confidence Confidence is key when youre asking for a higher salary. Immediately before going into your meeting, youll want to take a few moments to breathe deeply and practice your power stance, which exudes confidence. When youre ready to walk into your anfhrers office or your meeting, keep your head held high and a smile on your face. Stay positive and approachable, but also be determined.7. Lead With Your Accomplishments Instead of jumping headfirst int o the conversation and asking for more money, build up the conversation by talking about your accomplishments. Move the conversation forward by talking about what you would be able to do for the company if you were compensated better. When your employer decides to boost your salary, theyre doing so to get a return. If they cant landsee the value in giving you more money, theyre not likely to agree to your terms. Instead of assuming they can see the value, dont be afraid to spell it out for them.8. Dont Be DemandingWhile you want to be confident in asking for a higher salary, you dont want to come across as demanding. Instead of only stating that you believe you need a raise, open the room for conversation about why your boss may feel like you do or dont deserve more money. This is especially true if you are negotiating a starting salary. While most employers expect you to negotiate a little during the interview process, seeming too pushy can actually prevent you from closing the deal. If you come across like you may be a difficult employee, they may retract their offer and give it to someone else.9. Get a Number on the Table First When negotiating a salary, you want to be the one to start the negotiation. The first number discussed will act as the jumping-off point for the entire conversation, so if it begins too low, you may not be able to raise it to the salary youre hoping for. This being said, always use the top number in your range as your opening salvo. Because you and the employer will probably settle somewhere below the initial offer, you wont be able to raise your request after the negotiation begins.10. Keep Your Personal Needs Out of itIf youre looking for a higher salary, it probably has something to do with higher living expenses or wanting more financial freedom. While these are valid reasons for wanting a raise, they probably wont tempt your boss into giving you a higher salary. Dont use personal financial needs to negotiate. Rather than talking ab out how you need more money, explain why you deserve more money. Stick to things like your achievements or advancements within the company, or things youve accomplished during your career.11. Rank Your Requests If youre negotiating more than just your salary, youll want to focus primarily on the one thats most important to you. In most cases, this will be your salary, but you may also want to negotiate the terms of your benefits or vacation time. When listing your counter offer, do so by including the most important items first and the least important items last. This will give your boss or the hiring manager a clear indication of where your priorities lie and will be able to better negotiate terms youre happy with.12. Give Yourself Time to Think If you lay a number on the table and your boss gives you a counter, dont feel like you need to jump at the offer before it disappears. While you may be scared that the number will drop as time ticks away, the negotiation process is meant to take time. You dont want to accept an offer youre unhappy with just because you felt pressured to answer.Whether or not you agree with the number provided, take at least a few seconds to think it through. Hesitation can ensure you know what youre agreeing to, but may also make the other individual a little nervous, putting you at an advantage if you want to counter.13. Listen Before You SpeakWhen youre talking about needing a raise or a higher salary, you may become wrapped up in what youre saying without really listening to what your employer is telling you. Before you jump to further explain why you believe you deserve a salary boost, look for clues as to why your boss may be hesitant. In some situations, the company simply doesnt have the money to give you a salary bump. If it isnt in the budget, negotiating for more money will probably get you nowhere. However, if you listen to what your employer is saying, you may be able to negotiate for other benefits, such as more vacation ti me or remote working opportunities.14. Avoid Threats You may feel tempted to tell your employer that youre leaving if you dont get the raise. But while you may think this will scare them into giving you the money youre after, it actually may reflect badly on you.Companies want to invest in people that want to work for them. If you demonstrate that money is your sole priority, theyre not likely to ever give you a boost in salary. Because many recruiters, interviewers and managers have networks of similar individuals, it may also get around that youre a difficult employee.15. Dont Give UpNegotiating a salary is something that you will probably do many times during your career. Until you get used to the process, youll always be nervous about talking numbers.Instead of panicking over the thought of a negotiation, accept it with open arms. Continue to practice negotiating whenever you can, and soon youll be a master at the skill.Dont let the fear of negotiating keep you from getting the salary you think you deserve. With these tips, youll be well on your way toward becoming a negotiation master. Remember do your research, practice and carry yourself with confidence.p.s. Why Getting Fired Was Great for My Career Growth -The Muse

Why Getting Fired Was Great for My Career Growth -The MuseWhy Getting Fired Was Great for My Career Growth I never thought I would hear the words, Youre fired. And technically, I didnt. I heard, As our department changes, we are going in a different direction... When I got called into the HR managers geschftszimmer and my boss was there, I knew they were letting me go. Actually, the moment the HR manager called me on the phone, I knew it. I tried hard to focus on what they were saying, but of course, all I really wanted to do was get out of there as quickly as possible.I felt like a failure. I always did well in school, Id spent over five years at my previous job, and I had great recommendations. So how could I get fired? Ill admit it I cried the moment I walked out of the building. But guess what? My career didnt suddenly end that day. I turned the situation into a learning experience, and reflecting now, I know getting fired was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Here s whyIt Pushed Me to Be Honest About My SituationIt wasnt until after I got fired that I realized I was unhappy (and just been ignoring those feelings). For example, when I told my parents, they said Well, you were looking for something else and You werent really happy there anymore. Initially, these responses shocked me. Id been expecting something more along the lines of Thats terrible Were so sorry However, once I reflected on them, I realized they were absolutely right. While I liked the work, Id mentioned that I didnt think there was room to grow.Id been in denial because its easier to stay somewhere then move on. I needed to be pushed out of my comfort zone and forced to look for something else. And yes. No longer earning a paycheck was the exact motivation I needed. It Reminded Me That Being Unemployed Isnt the End of the WorldIts true After youve been fired, staying positive is easier said than done. There will be good and bad days. After letting it all sink in, I realized I still felt disappointed and hurt, but honestly, I didnt feel angry. I wasnt planning on staying at my former job for the rest of my career. Plus, there were times I felt like I didnt belong anyhow so why would I choose to stay at a place that didnt want me anymore? Reminding myself that- as hard as it may be- this was the better option , helped me feel better. With that said, I didnt wake up every day with this glass is half-full perspective- especially on days when the job search wasnt going my way. And thats why I also suggest making time for activities or hobbies that make you happy. Working on your resume and interviewing will take up a significant portion of your time, but its still important to to refresh and recharge. I allowed myself to take breaks from staring at my computer- even if it was just to take a walk. It Taught Me the Importance of Knowing What I Want in a JobYou may think the prospect of not working wouldve made me take whatever was available, but it had the oppos ite effect. Once I updated my resume to include the end date to my former job, it was official. I had to be honest with future employers- and with myself. Reflecting back, my former company wasnt the right fit for me. I was micromanaged, which stressed me out and caused me to make more mistakes. I had a difficult co-worker. I didnt always feel like I could ask questions. So, on my job search, I asked questions about company culture and focused on things that were important to me, like collaboration and delegation. Now, at my current job, I feel like Im trusted more when making decisions and the team is supportive and helpful. This makes me happier at work each day. While getting fired isnt the ideal situation, it isnt the end of the world either. As time goes on, it becomes much easier to reflect on the situation. Ive now been at my current job for eight months and Ive already been able to learn and grow in this short amount of time. So, even if right now, being unemployed feels like the worst imaginable thing, I want you to know that Ive been there, and you will get through it. In fact, you may even come out of it happier and (eventually) grateful for the experience. Photo of part looking out courtesy of joeyful/Getty Images.
